How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster. 1. Engine Speed Sensor The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster. The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors. If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40). It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When audi a5 replacement key is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part. 2. Injectors Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere. I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0. I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA! 3. Fuel Pump The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them – just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms. 4.
